MetaMedia to Develop Interactive Safety Training Programs for Maritime Workers

June 14, 2012 FREDERICK, MD— MetaMedia Training International, Inc. (MetaMedia), has been awarded a grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) to develop interactive scenario-based training programs to help prevent, mitigate, and respond to tragic and avoidable incidents related to hazardous materials in the maritime industry. MetaMedia has partnered with the Institute for Disaster and Emergency Preparedness (IDEP) at Nova Southeastern University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine (NSU-COM) to develop a library of HazMat scenarios that will be integrated into existing and ongoing hazardous materials training that is overseen by NSU-COM through their 5 year NIH-funded grant, South East Area Maritime Industry Safety Training project (SEAMIST).

“Nova Southeastern University’s School of Osteopathic Medicine is thrilled to partner with MetaMedia to deliver innovative, maritime-specific training scenarios via Apple’s iPad to workers at risk to hazardous material exposure in the maritime arena,” said Kristi Messer NSU-COM Assistant Project Manager, Institute for Disaster and Emergency Preparedness, Assistant Professor, Master of Public Health Program and Executive Director, Project HOPE. ”Engaging workers in real-life training scenarios with the help of an interactive interface is key to our goal of preventing and mitigating injuries among workers in high risk environments.”

MetaMedia will use Apple’s iPad to deliver the maritime safety training programs. The case studies will be based on real-life accidents using highly realistic scenarios that will cover the most critical information and knowledge required for dock workers to perform an incident risk-free response. HazMat situations will include a chemical leak, including the chemical and physical properties that influence the decision-making process, with a particular emphasis on confined spaces and/or oxygen-depleted environments.  An interactive design similar to previous successful and comparable simulations developed by MetaMedia will enable participants to engage with fellow trainees in a “simulated live” field drill via small groups.

To date, MetaMedia has won eight Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I, Phase II, and Fast Track grants from the NIEHS.

NIEHS is one of 27 institutes and centers of the National Institutes of Health, a branch of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
